In June 2018 I had the amazing opportunity to visit the beautiful country of Kenya. I was given an invite to visit a rural Maasai village in the Amboseli region near mount Killamanjaro. There, I was introduce to the Maasai community. I was welcomed with tremendous friendliness, as if I was one of their kinsmen. Whilst touring the village, I was able to speak with various elders. I saw some of the challenges they were facing, particularly access to fuel. This was highlighted as a major issue with difficulties arising from the of lack money and the logistics of living so rural.
Furthermore, entering a few of the homes (Inkajijik) I saw how cramped conditions were. This highlighted the potential health and fire risks associated with burning kerosene fuel in these poorly ventilated environments.
Upon leaving the village I had the idea; ‘what if we were to introduce solar technology to the village? It would potentially reduce a raft of issues; health, fire safety and financial costs’.
Mobilising a network of incredible driven people, 'Project_Daaylight’ was created. A multi-phase project working with friends in Kenya and the UK to provide sustainable energy solutions to the Maasai community in Amboseli.
